If you can't get rid of the skeleton in your closet,
you'd best teach it to dance. --
George Bernard Shaw
Counted cross stitch is one of my biggest hobbies. I started in high
school and seemed to be a natural. Since then, I have done many projects,
including
- Star of David - my first project, and a large one - took me three
years to finish.
- Dog collage
- Cat head - about half-way through I found out that one of the ears
was one stitch off - I had to rip it out and re-do it.
- Circle of Life
- Flowers - Calla Lilies and A Single Rose - beautiful pieces done on
black fabric; unfortunately the artist didn't do any more of them.
- Ten Commandments
- Frank Lloyd Wright windows - done on linen instead of normal cross
stitch fabric, which I discovered was not as challenging as I thought
it would be. In fact, it was not challenging at all. But the windows
are beautiful.
- Christmas ornaments
- Refrigerator magnets
I have also attempted other kinds of needlework:
- I knitted a pair of mittens once. It took so long that by the time
I was done with them they were too small for me.
- Then I tried to knit a sweater. I got about halfway up the front
side. It was so terrible, that my mother (who is very good at knitting
- started when she was 5 years old) ripped out most of it and started
over. I still have that sweater, and you can tell which part I did.
- I made a needlepoint rug for my dollhouse, which turned out okay.
- Then I made a needlepoint musical piece, which took me a while, but I
really loved it, so I didn't give up on it. But needlepoint's really not
my thing. (After I started, Mom - who is also really good at
needlepoint - looked at the back and corrected me on some things I was
doing wrong. It turned out okay, but you just can't do needlepoint like
you do cross stitch.)
I don't care for stamped cross stitch - it's cheating to have the design
already on the fabric!
