Some family trees bear an enormous crop of nuts. --
Wayne H
Here are pictures of some of the nuts in my family:
One of my favorite projects is cataloguing all the nuts in my
family tree. I've worked for many years to expand the tree and
have never tired of it. It has been extremely fun, as well as
educational. I even have a computer program (Family Tree Maker) into
which I can put all the information!
One of the things that I have come to realize is that the family tree is
not just names - it is history, past, present, and future. Things that
might seem trivial to us now, like where we went to college or what degree
we received, may be very interesting to future generations who want to know
more about the people from whom they are descended. In addition, the more
you know about a person, the easier it is to look up more information on
that person.
Here is how I would rank the order of importance of facts:
- Full name, birth date, death date
- Place of birth, place of death
- Marriage date and place of marriage
- Divorce or separation date and place
- Educational information - when, where, and what studied
And then there are stories! A lot can now be found on the web, but it is
small compared to what is in people's minds. For instance, stories of how
spouses met can bring the warmth and humanity back into a cold list of
dates. And that's just one type of story - there are thousands of
different stories for each person out there. I know I won't be able to
capture even one-millionth of them, but I can try to get people excited
about what I am doing so that they feel like they would like to record
their stories and facts for their descendents.
Unfortunately I don't have a whole lot of information - most of it only
goes back to the late 1800's, and it is more and more difficult to find
information as I get further and further back in the timeline. But here is
a list of surnames I have found in my search. I don't want to put first
names down because many of these people are still living! But if you see
your own surname and a few others you are familiar with, please e-mail me!
